According to Tamara Kaminska, the director of the Music Export Poland and coordinator of EMEE network, writing grant applications in the music industry is a desirable skill that can be developed. It is a long process that requires practicing, acquiring knowledge, competencies and exhibiting patience as well. Writing grant applications for international mobility is “a great start for a grant`s adventure”. However, before applying for grant support, it makes sense to look for institutional partners – organizations that can offer either financial or resource assistance, such as, providing free space for rehearsals.
When planning a project for which you are seeking funding, Tamara Kaminska suggests using a tree structure, where the roots are problems, challenges and opportunities. You should research the needs and trends of your sector or the part of a sector, then define what are the obstacles on your way, what are you struggling with and what is that doesn’t allow you to move forward. The trunk is actually your project. It should clearly respond to the needs and challenges. And finally, the branches are the results of the project. They show how the music industry will be developed thanks to its implementation.
To write a successful grant application, Tamara Kaminska shared these valuable tips:
- First of all, read the description carefully several times, and check whether you meet all the requirements and eligibility criteria. For example, a legal person/entity, a consortium or individual countries can be specified. You can also ask the contact person questions if something is not clear.
- Create a checklist of things that should be in the application form – requirements and necessary documents. Read the evaluation form which can help you improve your offer.
- Show the reason and purpose of your project, clearly and precisely explain its necessity. The project must be understandable to all who will read and evaluate it, and directly meet the requirements outlined in the call.
- Mention your similar projects. If you didn’t have them yet, show skills and relevant experience in another sector or business, demonstrating that you can handle the project.
- Be sure to indicate how the project will continue after its implementation and what the benefits will be for the industry/organization.
Where to look for calls for proposals?
- Grants are provided at various administrative levels – municipalities, ministries, national institutions, provinces in your country, regions of Europe (Baltic region), international foundations, institutes (Goethe Institute) and organizations of the European Union (Creative Europe).
- Various types of support are also available. In addition to financing the project, these can be promotional agreements with municipal cultural institutions, space for rehearsals or participation in showcases provided by Music Export Offices.
